Service Description
What is Art Therapy? Art Therapy is the integration of the study of art and psychology. Art can be used for diagnosis and treatment as well as for directly experiencing the healing quality inherent in the creative process. • Graphic media is used for improving cognitive, emotional and developmental growth. • Art therapists are trained in art materials and processes and in psychology. • Art Therapists know about the language of art, the nature, form and content of symbols. • The Art therapist serves as a witness and a guide to help the participant discover the personal meaning of their own symbols and facilitate the participant taking ownership of their own healing. • In the process the art therapist helps the participant to sublimate disturbing instinctual behavior and make appropriate substitutes. Who benefits from Art Therapy? As with any mental health profession, art therapy can be used by just about anyone throughout the lifespan, including but not limited to: • Normal people with challenges in their lives • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder • Grief and loss • Relationship issues • People suffering from mental illness • People seeking recovery from addictions • People with learning disabilities and developmental delays • Emotionally disturbed children • Neurologically damaged people • Elders, people with chronic diseases • People with histories of sexual abuse, medical trauma or violence • People seeking personal growth
